The landscape of oral healthcare is being fundamentally transformed by cutting-edge technologies. Artificial intelligence is emerging as a powerful diagnostic tool. Recently, a research team at Wuhan University introduced DentFound, a vision-language model capable of generating clinical-level interpretations of dental panoramic radiographs. This AI system can identify a wide range of dental diseases and generate comprehensive diagnostic reports, matching or even surpassing the quality of those written by human experts.

In the realm of surgical procedures, robotics is setting new standards for precision. A US-based company, Perceptive, has successfully completed the world's first fully autonomous robotic dental surgery on a human patient. Utilizing advanced optical coherence tomography (OCT) for 3D imaging, the AI-controlled robot was able to prepare a tooth for a crown in just 15 minutes-a process that typically takes two hours and multiple visits. Concurrently, researchers have developed a Miniature Intraoral Robot (MIR) with an absolute positioning error of merely 0.18 millimeters, promising minimally invasive and highly accurate tooth preparation.

Digital dentistry continues to streamline clinical workflows. Innovations such as intraoral scanners, CAD/CAM systems, and 3D printing are enabling same-day restorations and customized treatments. For instance, MIT researchers have developed an AI tool called VisiPrint, which can generate photo-realistic previews of 3D-printed dental restorations in about a minute, ensuring perfect color matching with natural teeth. Furthermore, new 3D-printable resins are allowing for the rapid, in-office fabrication of flexible partial dentures.

Beyond technology, significant academic progress is being made in orthodontics. Recent publications in international journals have detailed new frameworks for understanding and treating complex jaw misalignments, offering orthodontists more systematic approaches to rebuilding proper bite and jaw positions.

These converging trends highlight a future where dentistry is increasingly personalized, efficient, and patient-centric, driven by the seamless integration of AI, robotics, and digital manufacturing.
